Inspired by the festival of fire at Uisneach on the feast of Bealtaine, we see the Goddess Ériu overseeing the people celebrating the coming of summer.
Bealtaine, one of four major festivals, sits half way between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice and it is said that it was on Uisneach, in County Westmeath that the fires were lit and repeated across the land. This festival has been celebrated in some form for over 5000 years as some of our ancient sites are aligned to the sun at this time.
Ériu, the sovereignty Goddess, after whom Ireland or Éire is named, is said to have been buried beneath Ail na Mireann (stone of divisions) or Catstone, on hill of Uisneach where every year the festival is still celebrated.
