Tlachtga

One of the lesser-known Goddesses in Irish mythology is Tlachtga. She was the daughter of Mog Ruith, the blind and powerful druid who was said to have had a magical wheel whereby he could travel anywhere. It is thought that this wheel was a representation of the sun and in turn Tlachtga herself became associated, not only with this celestial body but also with lightning as her name in old Irish means earth spear. It is said that she gave birth to triplets, Doirb, Cumma and Muach, and in some versions of the story she died soon after, being buried on the hill which became her hill, the hill of Tlachtga. Certainly, this sacred place, now the hill of Ward, is connected to some of the very first fire festivals of Samhain. As with many of our ancient celebrations, it was a way of dividing the year, welcoming the darker days of approaching winter and acknowledging the remembrance of ancestors at a time when the veil between worlds was at its thinnest.
